Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the common questions our patients asked us have been answered below to help you.

Patients often decide to avail of orthodontic treatment as a cosmetic solution. Crooked or crowded teeth can often mean patients feel they need to hide their smile. Malocclusion also has the potential to cause other dental problems which can be avoided by orthodontic treatment.
Occlusion is a term dentists use to describe how teeth meet when jaws bite. A malocclusion describes any irregularity that occurs in the bite. A malocclusion can be a symptom or cause of problems with the temporomandibular joint, which connects the skull and the lower jaw. Problems that occur in the jaw and face muscles are technically referred to as Temporomanibular Joint Dysfunction.

Orthodontic treatment will correct your teeth positioning to give you the optimum bite thereby providing you with your perfect smile. Straightened teeth makes chewing easier and are easier to clean, and therefore such treatment can also help to reduce the onset of gum disease of tooth decay.

Orthodontic treatment can result in removing any stress on the temporomandibular joint. Such stress can be the cause of issues such as headaches, neck pain, facial discomfort or pain around the ear or jaw areas.

Using x-rays our orthodontic dentists will survey your mouth and jaw. This study will then be used to develop a plan for allowing the teeth to move into the correct position. Fixed brace are the most common solution. These can be adjusted and tightened over the course of the treatment period (which typically lasts between one or two years).
Depending on your budget or personal taste there are a number of different options you can choose from. These include braces which are comprised of various materials including metal, ceramic and clear plastic.
Resembling gum shields, Invisalign aligners are transparent aligners that slide over the teeth to gradually move them into the correct position during the treatment phase. They are manufactured based on the treatment plan your orthodontist has developed for you as well as using a computerised model of your teeth. They work very well for patients who are only presenting moderate crowding of the front teeth. Because they are transparent they are particularly popular. They are also removable to ensure regular cleaning.
How long treatment takes typically depends on the type of problem a patient presents. If we only need to straighten one or two teeth this process may take only 6 to 14 weeks. For more widespread issues where traditional braces are used, this treatment can take between 6 to 24 months.

Should you feel you require orthodontic treatment our team at River Forest Dental will guide you and discuss all the available options for you before you make any decision.
