Gentle Sedation in Leixlip

Anxiety or nerves can cause patients to put off important dental visits. We have the knowledge, training and expertise to ensure you visit is a comfortable one.

At all times our teams ensure your experience is stress-free. Our team has deep knowledge across a range of sedation techniques. We strive to help patients overcome any fear or phobias.

We will use sedation techniques for lengthy procedures or when we need to overcome conditions such as a limited mouth opening or a poor gag reflex.

It is important to be aware that Sedation is a safe and effective technique. It can involve administering muscle relaxants, anxiolytic, hypnotic or amnesiac which contain properties that will enable our patients to comfortably undergo dental procedures in a sleepy state. Often you will have little or no memory that the treatment took place.

If you have any questions or concerns relating the sedation please don’t hesitate to contact us below.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are a number of different techniques:
Temazepam is an oral pre-med which is given to patients before treatment.
Midazolam is an intravenous sedative which is given to patients over the course of the surgery.

All sedation procedures are exceptionally effective. Most of our patients prefer to opt for the intravenous method as this tends to produce a deep sedative effect.  Before administering any form of sedation, we will ensure that you are administered the technique that suits you best. Our Riverforest Dental team are fully trained in a range of sedation options.
Conscious Intravenous (IV) Sedation is a safe and effective form of sedation. It can be used as an alternative to General Anasthetic and can be helpful for anxious patients or during procedures that involve more complicated work. Before deciding to offer a patient IV sedation we will assess the patient thoroughly to ensure suitability. This form of sedation gives a patient compete relaxation. Patients will have no memory of the procedure and recovery is very fast. Our team will monitor you at all times whilst you are receiving IV sedation and will only discharge you once you have achieved full recovery.
To prepare for treatment under sedation, you should:
  • Wear comfortable loose clothing;
  • Don’t eat a heavy meal before treatment but fasting is not necessary;
  • Make sure you bring someone with you who will stay at the clinic whilst you undergo treatment. You should make this person aware that they will be responsible for looking after you in the hours after you leave the practice. At Riverforest Dental we have a policy that any patient undergoing IV sedation must be accompanied by an escort. Failure to have an accompanied escort will result in treatment being postponed and deposits will be lost.
Our team will full advise you on what you should do in the post-operative hours as well as giving you instructions relating to your dental treatment. In general, we advise:
  • Get rest at home and ensure your escort is present;
  • Do not attempt to operate any machines, don’t drive, and don’t sign any legal documents for up to 24 hours.
  • If you have children that require care we recommend you get someone to look after them as you recover.
